Progress Updates (7 total)
Update #1: Get 1000 users by 2026
I’ve spent so long building the platform (3 years) but have spent 0 time growing the user base. We need to reach critical mass to get some motion and commotion on the site! As tempting as it is to keep adding features and refining (engineers love this- “one more feature and they’ll come!”) it’s time to focus on community building.
Challenges Overcome: Spent tons of time building, refining, redesigning. I now feel the platform is the minimum it should be. I’ve told myself this last app update is the last major for a while. We have a full product- time to get people
Obstacles Faced: User conversion, especially getting people to post. But, as Paul Graham said, you need to force something into existent persistently and relentlessly
Looking Back: It’s like painting a beautiful picture but hanging it in your room. No one will see it
Update #2: Handed out ~150 flyers, reached out to different connections
15% completeI’m glad I started marketing. When handing out flyers and speaking face to face with people, it’s much more personal than a random ad, and people have been surprisingly receptive. Conversion rate is low, and posting rate even lower, but it’s a start- have gained maybe 30 users in 4 days. @michelle demo’d some of the flyers to her students, a bunch joined today, and I’ll be chatting with them next week (spoiler!). That was good proof that a well placed connection is more valuable than random attempts.
Challenges Overcome: First day gain about 7 users, next day 0. Today about 10 (thanks to @michelle). I am growing more confident due to surprisingly receptive feedback from strangers about the idea.
Looking Back: I’m surprised how little handing out flyers at the gym is working. Maybe only 1/100 have joined. I need to work on my sales pitch. I’m adding flyers to the cafe sandwich bags but doesn’t really seem to be working either (lol)
Update #3: Brand store launched; slower growth than I’d like
15% completeAdmittedly getting users is harder than I expected. No responses from any content creators, which I thought was a sure way to buy exposure. Even if we don’t hit our target, I think this focus will step up the needed foundation for later. https://opus.cafe/store let’s get people curious
Obstacles Faced: Hanging up flyers seems useless. There is a bulletin board full of other flyer that I ignore putting my flyers up Product Hunt launch got no attention. We will have to earn it the hard way!
Looking Back: When explaining the app to potential new users, I’m starting to think that visually showing some example goals in the app might be better than just explaining it. A picture/demo is worth 10000 words!
Update #4: 250 users. Working on Instagram
25% completeIt’s funny I’m building a social media when I don’t use them. So I’ve always ignored people saying “you should really market on insta and tiktok!” I DEFINITELY should have done this long ago. Although no conversions yet, we’re building up the presence. It’s pretty cool seeing others appreciate how interesting our community is. Almost there!
Obstacles Faced: Even though I’m running Instagram ads, that’s not really helping. A lot of accounts seem to be bots too. I haven’t partnered with a SINGLE creator yet- my main strategy! I need to start doing this. I’m not prioritizing this and I should!
Looking Back: Everyone is on Instagram and TikTok. Leverage that
Update #5: First content creator collab & badges
30% completeAs fate would have it, I met @juliet on a train, who has been helping me with content partnerships. Get a sneak peak of the cool projects @colincreates will be dropping here! More to come as well. We’ll see how conversion is from these.
Challenges Overcome: On the path of creator partnerships, my main goal for this progress.
Added badges by suggestion of the MST students. It’s fun seeing everyone’s collection!
Obstacles Faced: Sloooow growth
Looking Back: It would be good to meet more people at events and conferences. It’s always who you know - why would this be different?
Learning about UGC for TikTok and Insta
Update #6: 430 users! Running Google ads, UGC on TikTok
40% completeWith the help of @piyush_lodaliya We went from 1 download a day to 200! Wow! Running Google ads in apps has been super effective
Obstacles Faced: I haven’t lined up to the target demographic yet.
Unrelated to the goal but as observation: it’s not intuitive to post here. We need more a guided or helpful posting process
Also, user retention is a separate battle on its own!
Looking Back: To be honest, content creator conversions has been pretty low
Update #7: Some thoughts on some data
45% completeI’m able to see new user joins and how they interact with the app after joining. The trend has been pretty obvious, so I plotted it for confirmation:
Many people are signing up but almost immediately stop using the app. You can see on the top chart, we’re (kind of) hitting the revered “hockey stick” growth curve. But, using goal views as a proxy, we can see avg app usage per user is way down now. New users are just not sticking around.
Although this is disappointing, it highlights the next challenge I’d like to address. How can we instantly make the app more engaging? Every creator wants “instant and uncontrolled growth” of their invention, but that’s not the reality. Of course at times I wonder if we’re growing slower than we should, or question “why aren’t friends of friends of friends aren’t joining?”. As all difficult goals go: progress is slow and it’s good to look back and see what we’ve achieved! Just a month ago- there was maybe 2 posts a week. Now some days we have 10 a day!
The next theory is, with more instantaneous engagement, maybe users will find instant fun and value and share with their friends. Some thoughts for this include starting a goal on signing up, a better tutorial (video) and easier goal setting. Stay tuned!
Challenges Overcome: 465 users
Obstacles Faced: I keep reminding myself we’ve only been marketing for a month. Don’t get discouraged! This is just the beginning
Looking Back: Users != active users! That’s why people use DAU (Daily Active Users) as a metric
Big advice for anyone in the same situation: whenever I feel like this, it generally means it’s time for a break. I’ve been working hard and this is how burnout manifests in me!
Perhaps we aren’t targeting the correct audiences still? Lots of factors to consider
