Update #1: Run the BAA 5km in 19 min (6:07 min/mile)

I want to run the BAA 5km in 19:00 (6:07 min/mile).
Challenges Overcome: I want to focus on speed in the beginning part of the year to get as fast as possible before I start training for some longer distances in the fall. I have been running around 10-15 miles per week pretty consistently. I am looking to increase my weekly mileage up to 20-25 miles per week and do 2 speed workouts every week in order to reach this goal.

Update #2: Good First Week of Training Plan!

10% complete
Ran 19 miles this week with 2 interval workouts and 1 strength training session! The workouts were more short duration high intensity workouts. I want to work into some bigger tempo workouts next week (longer duration of high intensity). I felt super fresh and fast, but definitely started to feel the fatigue towards the end of the week especially after the strength session. I feel that I need to focus on consistency over intensity at least for these first couple weeks until I get adjusted to the load I am putting on my body.

Update #3: Great week 2!

Had another great week of training. Finished with ~18 miles on the week including 1 tempo run and 2 strength training sessions. Still trying to take it easy in order to let my body adjust to the changes in my training. I feel like this upcoming week I will be able to start pushing a little harder.

Update #4: Week 3!

This week was great! A little weird due to the weather at the end of the week. I ran 15 miles this week but couldn’t do my long run (or any run on the weekend and Monday) due to icy / cold weather. I did some bag work at my gym for some cardio to make up for the missing run. I feel really good and very fast so I am excited to get after it this next week!

Update #5: Week 4!

*Forgot to take a video this week so here’s a picture from one of my runs*. Decent week of training coming in at 14 miles and 1 tempo workout as well as 1 lifting session. I felt pretty good during my runs. Definitely struggled a bit but I feel that I am improving. For my tempo run I ran 18 min at a 6:52. This was very challenging and showed that I have a lot more work to do to get to where I want to be

Update #6: Week 5!

When it rains it pours… got sick and couldn’t run for most of the week! Still got 10 miles in but pretty much had to take the week off. I always get super frustrated whenever this happens but I am working to keep a level head and not over compensate for missing a week. Excited for next week and to get back on track. I have ~7 weeks to go so plenty of time.

Update #7: Week 6!

Good week of training! I was dealing with some back pain due to me being an idiot and trying to lift too heavy but was able to get some good runs including this interval workouts totaling up to 2.6 miles at a 6:56. I wasn’t feeling the best and was still able to maintain a pretty good pace which gave me some confidence. I totaled up 22 miles on the week (including mileage gained playing soccer). Overall great week! Next week I am aiming to take care of my body while keeping mileage above 20 miles and get one good speed session in to really test myself.

Update #8: Week 7!

Ran ~19 miles this week (again including miles cover during soccer). I feel very good and feel like I am getting faster. I feel that my consistency is starting to pay off. This upcoming week I will have a good tempo workouts to gauge roughly where I am at right now. 4ish weeks to go!

Update #9: Week 8

Another great week! Ran 26 miles this week including one tempo workout a session of soccer! Running has been very enjoyable with the improved weather. Less than 4 weeks out from the race and I am feeling very good. I believe I am very close to being able to hit my goal.

Update #10: Week 9 & 10

Forgot to post last week but I am really enjoying running and feeling good increasing my mileage and intensity. I ran a couple 5 km tempo runs during the past two weeks and I felt great on both of them. I ended up setting a PR of 20:28 while still having more gas in the tank. This gives me a lot of confidence going into my race! Week 9 was 25 miles and week 10 was 29.5 miles (including mileage from soccer).

Update #11: Race Day!!

Had a couple crazy weeks leading into the race with not the best training but I did what I could. I finished in just over my goal of 19 min. Overall very happy with the race. The start was very chaotic and I had to weave a lot. Also started my kick way too soon at the end. For my first time racing a 5k very happy! Definitely learned a lot of lessons on how to race. I feel like the 5 km is a useful tool for that. Can’t wait for my next race… 10km!
