Update #1: Patch a hole in drywall

When i moved into my new house a couple months ago I noticed that there was a giant hole in one of the closets. It seems the previous owner must have knocked something through the drywall when they were moving out. I figured that I might as well try my hand at patching it up!
Challenges Overcome: I've actually already finished the patching of the wall. General steps are cut out the hole with a saw blade to make it nice and square. Then sand it. Cut a piece of drywall just smaller than the hole to put inside. Add some mesh drywall tape to the seams. Cover with drywall joint compound and smooth out. Let dry, add another coat, let dry. Sand and reapply compound. Rinse and repeat.
Obstacles Faced: Using old materials and not using any support on the backside of the hole
Next Steps: Cut out the wall with a small saw blade. I didn't buy a drywall saw so I actually just took a small sawzall blade and just used that
Looking Back: So definitely do not be like me and use the 20 year old joint compound in the basement, just go buy some fresh stuff. Measure the piece of drywall you cut very carefully, I had some big gaps as I cut it a little too small.. you might want to use a drywall mesh instead of just the cheap tape since the mesh squares would add more support. No need to keep sanding and reapplying the compound, ypu can probably just apply the 2 coats and call it good

Update #2: After cutting the hole, cut the drywall piece to fit inside

40% complete
Make sure to cut the drywall piece so there aren't giant gaps between the piece and the wall
Challenges Overcome: Be really careful when you cut the hole in the wall and make sure there are no cables behind the wall like in my first photo!
Next Steps: Sand, then apply mesh tape and first coat of joint compound
