Progress Updates (4 total)

Update #1: Build a Miniature Garden

I want to add a miniature expansion to a garden to grow cucumbers, zucchini, and red hot peppers.
Challenges Overcome: Chosen a plot, my tools, and the initial process. I will be working from “coarse to fine” meaning shovel then hoe then metal rake. I believe this will allow for the quickest way to soil for planting!

Update #2: Shoveling phase done!

40% complete
Used my body weight on the flat portion of shovel to break ground. Continued technique to maintain rectangular shape of prior plot. Lots of roots and rocks so hard to use my hands to get those out.

Update #3: Hoed!

50% complete
Because of the grass being there before there is a lot of root removal that needs to be done. The prong grubber hoe was incredibly useful here due to the pronged side loosening the roots even finer.
Challenges Overcome: Soil looks great and expanded to the size wanted.
Obstacles Faced: I’ve never seen so many black flies in my life.
Next Steps: Need bug spray and gloves
Looking Back: What a prong grubber was and why it’s useful.

Update #4: No planting until May 31st

100% complete
There’s an age old saying in New Hampshire stating no planting until after Memorial Day. My dad doesn’t want to plant until the 31st so in terms of progress for the community challenge I am complete. The last big changes were more root removal and adding/mixing in compost!
