Update #1: Learn to read sheet music
Despite playing piano for 15 years I’ve always been intimidated by reading notes. Right now it just feels that I stare at a meaningless, confusing group of dots.
Challenges Overcome: Printed out a sheet and trying to play it by comparing it to an equivalent youtube video
Update #2: Every beat accounted for = powerful
20% completeStarting to recognize similar notes and chords. Still slow, but can use the sheets to confirm if my memory is correct
Challenges Overcome: Can slowly read some notes and pattern match
Obstacles Faced: Just by reading sheets, the cadence of my melody isn’t correct. How to get correct timing from reading?
I still end up memorizing the bars. How am I supposed to look at hand positions and read notes?
Looking Back: Each note contains its duration in the time bar, and each bar fills out the time signature. This is super powerful because you can instantly determine the timing of the hands, something normally difficult by just following videos.
Update #3: Counting each beat, finally growing eye hand connection
50% completeFor particularly challenging sections I’ve found counting “one and two and” helps a ton. I’m getting faster at snapping to where I just was on the sheet music.
Obstacles Faced: Still sloooow and can’t figure out how it should sound without listening to the song first.
Update #4: Sheet music sped up learning process
100% completeIf I ever doubted a sequence I could easily refer to how it should be played. My default way to learn from now on!
